Desi sweet tooths might wander off to different lanes of modern desserts, from flans to chocolate-chip cookies, only to return to a pot of home-cooked Firni or Sheer Khurma.

Made with a mother’s unconditional love, blended to perfection with her warm sugary hugs and bittersweet nutty garnishes, Firni is a delicacy in a desi household. Being an absolute Eid essential to a basic leftover rice dessert, Firni has its roots dating back to the royal era of the Mughals.

Firni is ideally made from rice, milk and sugar, and resembling kheer in taste, it is a  creamy, sweet and decadent treat, infused with cardamom and saffron fragrances.

Firni and kheer can both be served hot or cold, based on the temperature of the serving temperature, their taste can vary a great deal. The main difference between kheer and firni is their texture; kheer is smooth and creamy whereas Firni has a coarse, pudding-like consistency.

Firni is one of my favorite desi desserts, mainly when my mother cooks it. In the summers, my mother makes a fusion Firni called Mango Firni for us. The richness from mangoes makes the Firni extra special. The traditional Firni takes a long time to prepare, so now my mother uses Firni mixes available in the market to make her special Firni for us.The instant mixes are easy to use, take less time, and make delicious pots of Firni every time. My mother and I have tried many brands offering Firni mix in the market to find the perfect dessert recipe mix. I am sharing my review based on personal experience with my reader family. Let’s make Firni pots together!

Top Firni Picks Available in Pakistan

National Feerni Mix

DISLIKE

  • Fewer servings comparatively

According to my mother when she switched to dessert recipe mixes, National Feerrni Mix was the only one available in the market and still today, my mother loves it for its consistent taste throughout the years.

National Feerni Mixes use the finest ingredients to give this hyped-about desi dessert its traditional, old-fashioned taste. The recipe is easy to follow, with clear instructions, and doesn’t require running around the kitchen to gather multiple ingredients. The dessert can be cooked in less than 30 minutes. Combining one packet of National Feerni Mix with one liter of milk produces about 5 delicious servings.

Laziza Firni Khas

DISLIKE

  • No neutral flavoring available

Laziza Firni Khas is known for its nostalgic taste. With two different variants, Saffron and Kewra, it makes delicious pots every time.

The Laziza Firni Khas Saffron variant has a subtle earthy and grassy flavor with a hint of sugary, floral, and honey flavoring. Whereas Laziza Firni Khas Kewra has a strong aromatic scent of sweetness.

Its two variants give tough competition to National Firni Mixes. A packet of Laziza Firni khas makes about 7 servings per packet and has a strong flavor profile compared to National Firni Mixes.

Mehran Firni Mix

DISLIKE

  • Not widely available

Mehran is a relatively new brand in the market. However, the taste and quality did amaze me. It makes a pot of delicious Firni and does not disappoint ever. However, the packet is not as widely available which makes me sad.
